Hanfu Size Always Too Big or Small? Fit, Ease & Measurement Tips

Hanfu Size: Go One Up or One Down? Ease and Fit Table by Silhouette

"Is it better to size up or down for hanfu?" is the most asked question after Chang'an Hanfu's measuring tutorial. Many customers finish measuring net sizes but stall at the final step: how much ease should I leave by cut? Too big looks draggy; too small binds and risks exposure. This article gives an ease table for three mainstream silhouettes — cross-collar ruqun, mamian skirt, hezi skirt — plus a pick-by-height-weight rhyme, so you can choose right after measuring.

1. Why "Measured but Still Unsure": Ease Is the Last Blind Spot

Hanfu is not a one-size tee; its fit tightness varies by silhouette. Cross-collar ruqun adjusts by ties, so ease margin matters a lot; mamian skirt depends on waist and flat width, and too small simply will not close; hezi skirt depends on bust and skirt length, and too big slips. Chang'an Hanfu publishes flat-laid centimeters, but the step "net size + how much ease = which size" is what newcomers lack a table for. This article supplies that table.

  • Tie-type silhouettes (cross-collar ruqun): high ease tolerance, slightly big beats tight.
  • Clasp-type silhouettes (mamian skirt): waist must close, prefer slightly loose.
  • Wrap-type silhouettes (hezi skirt): bust should fit to prevent slip, but not red-mark tight.

2. Ease Table for Three Main Silhouettes

Cross-collar Ruqun: Leave 4–8 cm Ease

The upper ru is fixed by ties, so bust and length are adjustable. Suggest net bust plus 4–8 cm: slim figures take small ease (4 cm) for a closer slim look, slightly heavy take large ease (8 cm) for comfort. Length by height, sleeve length can roll or release. Chang'an Hanfu's version is mostly tied, high fault tolerance, best for newcomers.

Mamian Skirt: Waist Flat Width Plus 2–4 cm

The mamian skirt closes by waist ties or elastic; the waist must wrap. Suggest net waist plus 2–4 cm: fleshy sides take 4 cm, flat waist takes 2 cm. Length by height — too long can be shortened, too short cannot be fixed. Note: a too-small mamian will not close, so "when in doubt, go bigger."

Hezi Skirt: Bust Fitted, Length Precise

The hezi upper is a wrap-bodice; bust must fit to avoid slipping. Suggest net bust plus 0–2 cm, never size up. Skirt length best above the ankle; too long risks stepping on it. Chang'an Hanfu's hezi has anti-slip lining, but still pick by fitted bust.

3. Pick-by-Height-Weight Rhyme

  • Height 155–165 / weight 45–55kg: size S, small ease for a sharper look.
  • Height 160–170 / weight 55–65kg: size M, mid ease is safest.
  • Height 165–175 / weight 65–75kg: size L, mamian ease take the larger value.
  • Height 170+ / weight 75kg+: size XL, prefer tie-type silhouettes for tolerance.
  • Between two sizes: cross-collar ruqun take the larger, mamian take the smaller that still closes.

Remember the rhyme: "ties can be big, clasps not small, wrap stays fitted." Map this to the table above and you can drop straight to a size after measuring net dimensions.

A useful reality check is to measure a hanfu you already own and like the fit of, then compare its flat-laid numbers to the chart instead of relying only on your body net size. Body measurements tell you the garment must clear your frame, but a garment you already trust tells you the exact ease you personally prefer — some people like a close cross-collar ruqun, others a floaty one. If you are between sizes and the chart still leaves doubt, the safest move is to contact the shop with all four numbers (height, weight, net bust, net waist) rather than guess, because restocking a wrong size costs more time than one extra message. Chang'an Hanfu keeps a per-style size log from past overseas orders, which helps predict how a cut runs for taller or broader builds.

4. Try-on and Returns: Check Three Things Before Buying

  • Read flat-laid centimeters: map your net size plus ease, do not trust the S/M/L label alone.
  • Read cut note: does it say "loose / slim / standard"? Same size differs a lot by cut.
  • Read the current size chart: batches may tweak slightly; the order page's live chart wins.

Chang'an Hanfu publishes flat-laid centimeters and cut notes for every style, and supports policy-based returns after delivery, so you choose with evidence and have a way back if wrong.

Fabric stretch is the silent variable most size charts ignore. A cotton-linen cross-collar ruqun has almost no give, so its ease must come entirely from the cut you pick; a blended knit or spandex-touched fabric relaxes a centimeter or two after wear, which means a snug first try may become comfortable by the third outing. Mamian skirts with elastic-backed waist ties forgive more than fully tied ones, but the skirt panel itself does not stretch, so skirt length and wrap width stay fixed. When a listing says "stretchy" or "comfort fit," subtract a little from the ease you would otherwise add, because the material is doing part of the job. Conversely, rigid trims, stiff embroidered panels, and boned hezi bodices add zero give and demand exact bust matching. Reading the fabric line of the description is therefore as important as reading the size number — a number without a fabric context tells you almost nothing about how the garment will actually feel on your body.
